Convent of Mary Immaculate, Matara and the Adjoining Maha Maya Girls Collage are badly damaged. Extensive damage has been caused to the school buildings. All the furniture including chairs, desks, tables and cupboards etc., have been washed away. Madiha, Walgama senior school which is by the sea is completely damaged.

* During the “TSUNAMI” 2004 which raged the entire coastal belt of the country on 26th December, our members were busy providing relief to those affected. The monstrous wave hit the coast at very high speed with a very high water level razing to ground thousands of houses, killing several thousands and rendering over a million homeless. Most of the people were left with only what they were wearing as all their belongings were washed away or buried in the send. It will take a few months before the debris is cleared to make the places look like what they were earlier but without any dwellings.

History

Club was extended by the Lions Club of Colombo Host in 1967. This is the oldest club in the revenue district of Matara and has extended several Clubs in and around Matara. Meetings of the club were held at the residence of the Charter President over a number of years and the place was then popularly known as the “Lions Den”. The club has a membership of 40 at present and has a good record of having its meeting away from the home town, Matara, coupled with service projects in remote villages and outings for the family members of lions. The Cabinet is represented by 3 or 4 members every year. Board and General meetings are held every month.

Our Club had the luck and privilege of having a District Governor from our membership he is Lion Chandrakumara Wijaya Gunawardana.
